FREE Vintage Cooking & Baking Clipart

Seems like all of my projects are taking their sweet time crossing the finish line these days, so my posting has been light.  I hope you've been enjoying the apparel giveaways from Shabby Apple and Mikarose, and that you'll be sticking around to enjoy some festive recipes, whimsical crafts, and my gift guide for home chefs/bakers in December!

Speaking of gifts for chefs and bakers, here's a collection of vintage clipart from 1939 (The Modern Hostess Cook Book: for this Season).  It's my little gift to all those who enjoy whisking, sautéing, and flambéing their way through the holidays!

3 Charming Holiday Crafts
A Little Birdie Told Me...No. 48

"Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success."
--Henry Ford

Welcome to
"A Little Birdie Told Me..." Tuesday!
If you're here to share a craft, recipe or project post,
you'll find the linky and the specifics on how to
join the party after the features below.

----------------------------------------

This weekend, we carried on our tradition of trekking & picnicking in the mountains with good friends before selecting the perfect tree. True, the tree sits in a rickety bucket on the back patio, looking downright uncomfortable in its nylon netted straightjacket, but we're in no hurry.   Encouraged by the low-key, no-stress vibe that made our Thanksgiving celebrations this year such an absolute pleasure, we've vowed to approach the rest of the holidays with the same unhurried cadence.

------------------------------------------------

In the spirit of taking your time to create with care, passion and  attention to detail, I'm featuring these three winter holiday crafts:

Fabric Pinecones
from The Silly Pearl

 ----------------------------------------

Waterless Snow Globes
from The Answer is Chocolate

----------------------------------------

 Felt Hot Cocoa Ornament
Flamingo Toes

  ---------------------------------

If you've been featured
(here or on Facebook)

Mini Mayflower Place Card Tutorial

I've been in the mood for miniatures lately, and when I saw the diminutive Christmas tree spools at Musings from Kim K, I was inspired to make a spool creation of my own.  Thus was born the Mini Mayflower Place Card.

These charming little place cards are easy to make and use mostly repurposed materials.  If you can fold a paper hat, you can fold a paper boat.  Old book pages, stray buttons and scrap paper can often be found around the house.

Here's what you need to make a fleet of mini Mayflowers of your own:

MINI MAYFLOWER PLACE CARDS

Supplies (per place card)
1 wooden spool
1 3.75" x 2.75" piece of old paper
(book pages and sheet music work nicely)
3" segment of a bamboo skewer
Mayflower sail template, below
(personalized, printed out on off-white paper and cut out)
Small hole punch
Piece of decorative paper to wrap around the spool
(size will depend on size of your spool)
vintage lace or trim
button
hot glue gun

Step 1:  Fold the 3.75" x 2.75" piece of paper into a paper boat.  Need a refresher course?  You can find a great one HERE.  After folding, I insert the tip of my pinky into the point from the bottom of the boat to give it more volume.

Step 2:  Download the Mini Mayflower Sail template by right-clicking on the image below.  Save.  Then, insert the image into a word processing document.

Nothin' fancy, but it does the job I assure you.
Personalize, then print and cut out both sails.  Use a small diameter hole punch to punch a whole at the top and bottom center of the large sail.

Step 3:  Measure and cut a strip of decorative paper to wrap around the spool.  I used "Black & Kraft French Script" CCP2278 from Canvas Corp. Use a dab of hot glue to affix one end of the strip to the spool.  Wrap around and glue the loose end.

Step 4:  Make a hole by inserting the sharp end of a bamboo skewer through the bottom of the boat and out through the center point.  Pull skewer all the way through.

Step 5:  Insert the 3" skewer through the hole you've just made, leaving 1/4" extending from the bottom.

Step 6:  Thread the large sail on to the top of the skewer.

Step 7:  Put a small dab of hot glue on the back of the small sail.  Attach to the front of the "mast" so that the bottom tips slightly overlap the large sail.

Step 8:  Put some hot glue on the bottom of the paper boat, around the middle where you skewer pokes through.  Insert into the hole in the spool; toggle and adjust to perfectly position the boat.

Step 9:  Embellish the spool by wrapping with vintage lace or trim (securing ends with hot glue) and a small button.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Tiny Pilgrim Hats ~ For Tiny Pilgrims or Thanksgiving Treat Cups

If you have a die-cutter machine, Lifestyle Crafts has a Thanksgiving die that you're going to want to have for your collection --

Truth be told, I don't own a die-cutter (yet).  The Epic 6 from Lifestyle Crafts is on my Christmas wish list.  But, in the meantime, I'm very thankful for having crafty and generous friends who are willing to share.  Last week I enjoyed weathering a rainy afternoon crafting with Holly of 504 Main who let me get all "kid in a candy store" in her collection of dies.

Regular readers of Rook No. 17 are already familiar with my weakness and fainting-couch-fondness for miniatures.  So, when I saw the diminutive paper pilgrim hat that Holly had made with the pilgrim hat die fro Lifestyle Crafts, I squealed, swooned, and got right to work making a batch of my own.

I had originally thought of using the little hats as treat cups for the kids' table on Thanksgiving, but after jokingly placing one of the hats on my daughter's head, I knew I was on to something fun.

Tiny Pilgrim Headband Hats
Die Cutting Machine
Colored Paper
(I used black and rust cardstocks that were white on the opposite side)
Glue dots or tape
(I used Elmer's mini glue dots)
Clear or Black Tape
(I used Gorilla Tape)
Thin wire headbands
(I used a 3-pack from Scunci)

Step 1:  Cut pieces with your die cutter.

Step 2:  Assemble by fitting the pieces into the pre-cut slots.  So easy!  I used mini glue dots to hold it all together.

Step 3:  Tape hat to a headband.

Step 4:  Wear and smile!

I'm already imagining these hats in green for St. Patrick's Day!

WISHING THE HAPPIEST OF THANKSGIVINGS TO ALL PILGRIMS...GREAT AND SMALL!

Friday

Eggplant Caviar ~ The Perfect Dip for a Pita Chip

Smoky, flavorful, and a healthy alternative to cream-based dips, Eggplant Caviar has roots  in both Russia (as baklazhanaya ikra) and France (as caviar d’aubergine).  It is simple to make and has a marvelously creamy texture and a bright, fresh flavor.

I like to serve my Eggplant Caviar with pita chips or toasted pita wedges. I'm always pleased when those who profess to dislike eggplant try this dip and then go back for seconds...

Eggplant Caviar

2 purple globe eggplants (about 1 1/4 pounds each)
2 shallots, minced
2 cloves of garlic, minced or pressed
2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and finely chopped
1/4 cup roughly chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
Juice of one small lemon
salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Step 1: Pierce eggplants all over with a bamboo skewer, then roast. You may do this either by placing them directly on top of the burners of a gas range, turning the flame on high, then turning as each side blackens and softens, until the skins are completely black and the inside is tender. Alternatively, you can broil the pierced eggplants in a shallow dish, turning every five minutes until the entire eggplant is blackened and the flesh is fall-apart-tender.

Step 2: Peel away the blackened skin and discard the stem of the eggplants. Keep a water bowl on hand to remove any skin that sticks to your fingers.

Step 3: Place eggplants in a food processor and pulse until pureed. Transfer to a large bowl and stir in the shallots, garlic tomatoes, parsley, olive oil, cumin and lemon juice. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Dip is ready to eat, but gets better after it has been refrigerated for a few hours. Delicious when served warm on a cold evening. Refreshing when served cold on a hot day.
